Native Americans have lived around the Grand Canyon for millennia but the habitation of the Grand Canyon itself can be traced back to 200 B.C. when Ancestral Puebloan peoples lived in its walls. Later other tribes moved into the Grand Canyon, migrating from the upper to lower levels throughout the year. To this day, there are 11 tribes that have historical connections to the Grand Canyon. There’s actually a town within the Grand Canyon where the Supai Village is located within the Havasupai Indian Reservation. This town cannot be accessible by road, and it is also marked as one of the most secluded communities in the United States. They also get their mail delivered by pack mule!

The first European sighting of the canyon can be traced back to 1540 when soldiers led by García López de Cárdenas laid eyes upon the immense sight while searching for the rumored seven cities of gold of Cibola. The canyon remained a largely unexplored area of the West until the U.S. government-funded explorer, Joseph Christmas Ives, researched the Colorado River becoming the first European American known to reach the river within the Grand Canyon.

Tourists began visiting the Grand Canyon by the end of the 19th century, one of them being at that time, the future president Theodore Roosevelt, who after taking office in 1901 declared the geologic feature a national monument during his second term in 1908. President Woodrow Wilson then officially declared the site a National Park in 1919.
