Traveling with Minor Children

Are you aware that there are rules and guidelines for single parents and grandparents who are traveling with a minor child? Whether you are married, divorced, one parent is an adoptive parent, one of the parents has sole custody – whatever the case may be – it is always a good idea to be prepared to show documentation that you are allowed to take the child out of state or out of the country on your own.

The documentation should state exactly what the situation is – i.e. – if one parent is out of the picture entirely, if the grandparents are taking the minor on vacation without either parent present, etc… and it needs to be signed and notarized. It should also state that whoever is traveling with the minor can make all the necessary medical decisions regarding the child if the need arises. The letter can be as simple as something to this effect:

Although the rules are typically enforced more when crossing international borders – and via air travel, in reality they do apply to crossing state lines and cruising. And it is never a bad idea be prepared ahead of time, to be proactive and to have the necessary paperwork on hand should the need arise.
