Howdy! It’s Sunday Funday and we are going to the Bordeaux Region to discover 5 of their best wineries.

Located in southwest France, it is one of the worlds most prestigious wine regions. Almost 90% are dry, medium and full-bodied red Bordeaux blends. However you can find high quality white wines.

There are 3 Bordeaux grape varieties that make up 98% of all grape plantings-Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. The reason that most Bordeaux reds are blends is due to the rate at which Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon bud, flower, and ripen.

If you mouth isn’t watering already, it’s about to! Grab a glass-let’s go!

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Pauilac

The Chateau has been owned and operated by the Rothschild family since 1853. Today, the produce some of the top-ranked wines in all of France, including one of the most expensive wines in Bordeaux. It is also one of the 5 Bordeaux first growth wineries according to the 1855 Bordeaux Classification.

Your 2.5 hour tour includes a visit to the winemaking facilities of the chateau, a tasting and Baron Philippe de Rothschild’s collection of wine-themed art pieces.

Reservations fill up quickly so be sure to schedule your visit well in advance.

Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, Martillac

Owned by Florence and Daniel Cathiard, former ski champions, this winery has been completed restored.

Not only can you sample some of the chateau’s highly regarded red and white wines, you can also stay in the luxury hotel. You will find a spa, Michelin-stared restaurant and wine bar, all perfectly nestled amount vineyards, forests, and manicured lawns.

The chateaux is about 30 minutes of the city center of Bordeaux and is open 7 days a week.

We can’t just mention a sister chateau without adding it to our list! The chateau is not only the smallest in Bordeaux but it also the most famous.

Chateau Beauregard produces the most expensive wines of Bordeaux. If you are a lover of Merlot, there is no better place to sample, that here.

The chateau has also recently undergone a renovation that includes a state-of-the-art vat room and includes organic growing methods.

Chateau Villemaurine, Saint-Emilion

This chateau offers a unique experience, touring the underground cellars, which used to be limestone quarries for over 800 years.  Be prepared to walk in the dark underground.

Book the Privilege Tour, so you can sample some of the best Merlot’s grown on limestone soil. All while enjoying the views of Saint-Emilion on the terrace.

Chateau Mangot, Saint-Emilion

This chateau is very unique in that you can sample white and rose. While Chateau Mangot is a smaller winery, it is not well known so you wont have to fight through crowds.

The Todeschini family operates on creativity sustainable winemaking.

Be sure to sample M de Mangot, an unusual white wine made of Chardonay, Colombard and Roussane. And don’t forget to sample Todeschini Chateau Mangot-their incredible red wine that as an absolute must.
